However, something different happened. People started buying bitcoin as an investment and as a store of value.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the bitcoin price rose and bitcoin millionaires started to crop up, more and more people rushed to buy the digital currency with the hopes of accumulating wealth in the long term or cashing out for a hefty profit. As a result, bitcoin became more of a store of value, akin to gold, than an actual currency. Hence, the term \u201cdigital gold\u201d was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bitcoin has established itself as digital gold because it has proved itself as an investment asset and as a store of value. Like gold, bitcoin acts as a store of value because you can use it as a hedge against the fallout of a financial crisis. Moreover, you can use it as an alternative to save your money when your country devalues its sovereign currency or the currency weakens for economic reasons.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gold vs. Bitcoin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/rgKcsmLU1P0Vf1ilx3cGGOGGg6_TMuYhvbZhUxPNdYQDfjzcXOzlLFQPMoaLyI-ZcVsAsO8FSfSuuv3bTuTObYCTBLv_H9Iwn2SzChzbU_Y9u4ke2PFFZ7CK93hfeSZr19KtYAgEl6O3zwNJvxRLPQ\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>Source: Pixels<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bitcoin has many of gold\u2019s characteristics plus several benefits that &#8211; as many bitcoiners argue &#8211; make it superior to gold. They include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Rarity:<\/strong> Just like gold, bitcoin is in limited supply. The number of bitcoin that will ever exist is 21 million. Every four years, the release of new bitcoin units will decrease, creating more scarcity.<\/li><li><strong>Divisibility:<\/strong> Gold can be melted into smaller pieces, making it divisible. Similarly, bitcoin has smaller units. The smallest unit of bitcoin is a <em>satoshi<\/em>, which is a hundred millionth of a bitcoin.<\/li><li><strong>Durability:<\/strong> Bitcoin cannot be physically destroyed or damaged because it only exists as code.<\/li><li><strong>Portability:<\/strong> Mobile bitcoin wallets make it easy to take bitcoin with you wherever you go, making it highly portable.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>While both bitcoin and gold have similar attributes, bitcoin is considered a superior store of value by bitcoin advocates.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike bitcoin, physical gold is not easy to transport or transfer from one person to another. You have to arrange for secure transportation, which costs money and time. What\u2019s more, the supply of bitcoin is mathematically asserted to be finite, whereas the true supply of gold can only be estimated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bitcoin as a Digital Currency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The dream of bitcoin\u2019s role as a digital currency is not lost. Bitcoin is used by many to pay for goods and services, making it a digital currency. Nonetheless, its use as a currency is not widespread.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the factors inhibiting this are price volatility and speed. These issues are, however, should be temporary. For example, the price of bitcoin will become more stable as the market expands.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lightning.network\/\">Lightning Network<\/a> (LN) is providing a solution to speed up bitcoin transactions. The Lightning Network, a second layer built on the Bitcoin blockchain, aims to scale the speed of bitcoin transactions to millions per second.
