UPDATE: The Twitter accounts of Cash App, Tesla boss Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Apple, and Uber have also been compromised; with the scammers offering to double Bitcoin payments made to a support a fake COVID-19 Fund.
In what has become a spontaneous attack on the cryptocurrency community and other top individuals, the official Twitter accounts of at least five exchanges – Binance, Coinbase, Kucoin, Bifinex, and Gemini- have been taken over by hackers who are now posting a fake cryptoforhealth 5000 BTC giveaway.
Also affected is the Twitter account of Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao who had his “Do Not Click” warning tweet deleted, and a retweet of the scam post uploaded.
At this time, unconfirmed reports show that some followers have fallen for the scam giveaway with about 7BTC sent to the address by a number of victims.
Other high profile targets of the scheme include Tron (TRX) founder Justin Sun, Kanye West, and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.
Crypto enthusiasts on Twitter have shared opinions on likely causes of the attack, and are hopeful the accounts will get recovered immediately.
